REM Program at UNT

Fundamental and applied research to be undertaken as part of the REM program involves ultrasonic wave propagation through acoustical metamaterials or meta-surfaces. The REM program will provide mentorship and engage students on research supported by the NSF sponsored Emerging Frontiers for Research and Innovation, (EFRI) one of the major emerging frontier multidisciplinary groups in Texas on promoting collaborative and cutting-edge research and educational activities. Some of the ongoing projects in UNT′s EFRI program include development of multifunctional acoustic devices and metamaterials, studying time modulated crystals, topological properties and Anderson localization of sound in phononic crystal.

The EFRI program led by Prof. Arkadii Krokhin, University Professor in Physics, fosters collaboration between the Colleges of Engineering, Science, and Center for Agile and Advanced Manufacturing at UNT, where experts from complementary disciplines work together to develop innovative scientific and engineering solutions to existing and emerging challenges in physical acoustics.

REM program at UNT will engage high school and graduate/ undergraduate students, and teachers on research leading to the discovery of new knowledge, provide mentoring from a diverse research team, promote graduate study as a future professional goal, and provide instructive and appealing learning components. As part of the research experience, the participants will formulate a hypothesis, develop a research plan, carry out a research investigation, prepare progress reports using multiple technology-enriched approaches, present findings to a group of peers and research mentors through a variety of presentation modes, and reflect on achievements. In addition, specific periods will be set aside for structured learning and professional development activities designed to provide the participants with skills, tools, and training essential for success in research.

Well-qualified graduate/undergraduate, high-school students, and teachers are invited to apply for a research experience at the Department of Physics, University of North Texas in Denton, TX, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Although most of the positions are for US citizens or permanent residents, a few positions from the EFRI project will be for any foreign student educating in the U.S.

8-week long program for graduate/undergraduate and teachers; May 30 - July 21, 2023

4-week long program for high school students; June 26 - July 21, 2023

All the selected participants will be provided a stipend based on their qualifications as per NSF regulations. Additionally, room and board at UNT may be provided for participants.

In this program, we plan to recruit graduate/undergraduate students along with high school or college teachers with a high degree of self-motivation for research and development. Undergraduate students with strong motivation towards graduate study in STEM fields will have preference. Graduate students in their first or second year of their graduate program will be preferred. For teachers or educators with a motivation for research and outreach of higher education to the community will be preferred..

Applications will be reviewed starting April 3 (Mon), and will continue until all research positions are filled. An online interview of shortlisted candidates will be performed before making the final selection. All selection processes will be completed at least one week before the progrm starts.

Note; Program participants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States, per NSF requirements.
